about

Ruach Neshama is a collection of songs of soul and breath. These songs employ traditional texts, lyrical midrash and the meditative practice of the nigun—the wordless melody—to open our hearts to the ever-present guidance and compassion within. They strive to paint the wisdom and words of our ancestors on a canvas of body and nature, and to ask the question: What is my soul calling for? What teachings do Earth, Song, and Spirit offer me?

Many thanks to the incredible musicians who shared their voices on these tracks: to Kendra for being my sister in life, love and music, to Deborah for sweet harmonies and infinite padding, to Jon for relinquishing his time and office space for recording, to Gayanne for sharing my passion for musical connection to earth, and to my mother Valerie for her ongoing guidance in sound, song and spirit. Thank you to my Rising Song cohort Rebekka, Gedalia, Eitan, Batya, Rena, and Sam, for the never-ending inspiration, support and friendship that have lifted my spirit and my offerings to the world. To Don Godwin for mixing and editing these layered tracks, to Eliyahu Sills and Will Robertson for instrumental offerings, and to Josh Fleet for his logistical support. This album would not exist without Joey Weisenberg's vocal and instrumental contributions, his musical vision and patience, and his continued role as my teacher and collaborator. Thank you Joey for your encouragement, it continues to be a precious gift.

These songs were brought to life by the crickets, birds and trees who intoned with me as I played in their wood, and the Divine Breath which spun through the air as we sang. I owe so much to my parents Valerie and Paul for supporting a musical takeover of their wild backyard and encouraging my artistic creations at every stage. My parents, sister and in-laws, Susan and Richard, stepped up during quarantine to care for my incredible and inspiring daughters, Oriah Noa and Lyla Zera, and without their support this album would still be unfinished. To my two better halves, Kendra and Jon: thank you for believing in me, for loving me, and for showing up again and again to music-make, to dream, and to be. These tracks are songs from you, and to you.

Thank you to the many friends, colleagues, and organizations who chose to contribute in support of making this dream a reality. Thank you for listening and singing with me. May these songs bring you blessing, breathing and light.
